Known as the “Father of Faith,” Abraham is one of the Bible's most central and important figures. His life is recounted in the book of Genesis, which shows that his relationship with God and the challenges he faced form the foundation of his reputation as an example of faith and obedience.

### **The first accounts of Abraham**

Abraham, originally called Abram, was born in Ur of the Chaldeans, an ancient city in Mesopotamia. He was a descendant of Shem, Noah's son.

His story begins when God calls Abraham to leave his homeland and his family and go to a land He would show him.

This calling was Abraham's first test of faith, because he had to leave everything he knew and trust completely in God's promise.

> **“Now the Lord said to Abram: Leave your country, your relatives and your father's house, for the land I will show you. I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great; and you will be a blessing.” Genesis 12:1-2**

### **Why did Abraham have to leave his relatives?**

God, in all His greatness, could have blessed Abraham in Haran, the city where he lived. But asking him to leave his father's house meant losing the security he had there.

If Abraham departed with some servants and possessions, we can understand that he still left much behind. Abraham's family was therefore not of limited means, which tested his faith even further.

### **Toward Canaan**

Obeying the Divine call, Abraham departed with his wife Sarah, his nephew Lot and all his possessions and servants. His journey took him to Canaan, the land God had promised.

The journey was full of challenges, including the famine that forced Abraham to go to Egypt, where he faced ethical dilemmas and difficulties. Nevertheless, his faith remained firm, and he continued following God's directions.

During his stay in Egypt, Abraham did something very unusual. When Pharaoh saw Sarah's beauty and asked about her, Abraham said she was his sister, leading Pharaoh to bring her to the palace.

### **Why did Abraham lie about Sarah?**

Although considered heroes of faith, the figures mentioned in the Bible had moments of fear when they did not make the best choices.

In a completely unfamiliar land, among people with different customs and uncertain of what might happen to his own life, Abraham feared that the men who admired Sarah might kill him to have her.

And God did not condemn Abraham for this, because He understood that, even though he was afraid, Abraham had gone to Egypt for no reason other than to do God's will. Later, Pharaoh released them to continue their journey.

### **The promise of a son for Abraham**

One of the most significant promises God made to Abraham was that he would become the father of a great nation, even though he and Sarah were elderly and childless.

This promise was an ongoing test of faith for Abraham and Sarah, who waited many years to see it fulfilled.
But even as the years passed, God did not forget what He had promised Abraham and fulfilled His promise.

### **The sacrifice of Isaac**

The most dramatic event in Abraham's life is undoubtedly the test of his faith when God commanded him to sacrifice Isaac.

Despite his pain and lack of understanding, Abraham did not fail to obey. At the last moment, an angel of the Lord stopped him, providing a ram as a substitute. This act of obedience established Abraham as a model of unwavering faith.

### **Why did Abraham have to surrender his son Isaac?**

Isaac was the one Abraham loved so much, the promise of his old age, his precious son…

God already had great plans for Abraham, but first He needed to test his faith and know whether God was the one he loved most.
