Historical records describe him as a former slave who, besides receiving freedom, was promoted by Emperor Claudius to procurator of Judea, and as the husband of Drusilla, Herod's daughter. But they also connect him to the intriguing Egyptian messiah, to words such as cruel and lustful, and to the phrase “he exercised all the power of a king, but with the instincts of a slave”—just some of the theories surrounding his name.

Beyond being a figure always involved—controversially and covertly—in Judea's political affairs, Felix is also a biblical character, mentioned in Acts 23 and 24. And if there were any doubt whether historians' portrayal of him was real or exaggerated, here is confirmation:

> “At the same time he hoped Paul would give him money so that he might release him; therefore he often sent for him and spoke with him.” Acts 24:26

But while keeping Paul imprisoned was merely an opportunity for Felix to try to profit, little did he know he was part of something much greater:

> “But the Lord said to him: Go, for he is a chosen vessel for Me, to bear My name **before the Gentiles, kings and the children of Israel.** And I will show him how much he must suffer for My name.” Acts 9:15,16

For Paul's defense at his trial in Caesarea was his own testimony, which he even had the chance to give to Agrippa—who might not otherwise have heard it.
