In AD 80, in an attempt to appease the people after Nero's reign and restore grandeur after the fire, the Flavian Amphitheater was given as a “gift” to the Roman people. If you have ever received a gift with obvious ulterior motives, it is not very hard to understand what motivated this construction.

Rome was known for brutal “spectacles,” where everything was designed to be as violent and fatal as possible, and its newest venue for this kind of entertainment would be no different. After Christians had been blamed for the fire of Rome, the Roman people themselves took vengeful pleasure in promoting and watching one particular “attraction”: wild beasts devouring Christians.

In a culture where the Emperor is a god, a growing community that refuses to worship him—and consequently becomes not only independent of him but also stands outside the masses manipulated to serve his interests—does not take long to be seen as opposition, even though that was never its intention and there had been no offensive action against the Emperor, as there was with the Zealots in Judea.

But imagine if this Faith spreads and freedom from the culture, religion, customs and “needs” imposed by Rome's social life reaches everyone, and what kept people dependent on you no longer matters, eh, Domitian?
