Why watch the film Lia?

Adapted from the miniseries Lia, the feature film tells Leah's story, found in the book of Genesis. She is Laban's eldest daughter and Rachel's sister. Leah becomes Jacob's first wife, although she was not his initial choice, creating a complex dynamic in her life and the subsequent Biblical story.

Leah's story is introduced when Jacob flees his brother Esau's anger and goes to Haran, to his uncle Laban's home. Jacob falls in love with Rachel at first sight and agrees to work for Laban for seven years as the price of marrying her.

However, on the wedding night, Laban deceives Jacob by substituting Leah for Rachel, explaining that it is not customary to marry the younger daughter before the elder. Jacob then works another seven years so he can also marry Rachel.

Leah's life is marked by a constant search for love and acceptance. Although she is Jacob's wife, her husband clearly prefers Rachel, creating competition for attention and affection within the family.

Seeing that Leah is rejected by Jacob, God blesses her with children. She gives birth to six of Jacob's twelve sons, who would become leaders of Israel's twelve tribes.

Despite her unrequited love for Jacob, Leah finds comfort and purpose in motherhood, faith and her relationship with God.

Her story embodies themes of faith, resilience and the complexity of human relationships. Leah emerges as an essential figure whose descendants play a central role in shaping Israelite identity and faith.
