Anyone who enjoys the musical arts, secular or gospel, will be interested in this biographical film about American singer and songwriter Bart Millard. *Bart’s* musical talent emerged after a disappointment in American football, a sport central to his family’s tradition, especially as the son of a renowned player of his time.

Not into music? You will enjoy it too. Not all of us share that musical fascination, but we all must face the reality behind creating something, whether music or other dreams.

Today, Bart Millard leads the famous Christian band *MercyMe*. Its meaning already helps us understand why this film is for everyone. Who does not need mercy?

Bart’s story goes beyond composing the best-selling and most-listened-to Christian song of all time in the United States, *I Can Only Imagine*. His story answers a difficult question:

### **Were the Millards born to play or sing?**

Bart had to face the pain of his mother abandoning him. His father, frustrated with his own career, took his anger out on the family until he destroyed it. Young Bart grew up mistreated by his father, and only music helped him forget that this cruel, violent man would never admire him.

When a serious injury ended Bart’s football career, his father’s frustration became even more aggressive and deeply felt.

Like his mother, Bart decided to leave his father and take on the challenge of making a living from music, his true gift. Although his talent was recognized and applauded, he realized that being good was not enough. Singing alone was insufficient: to succeed, he needed to convey what he truly carried inside. Yet his resentment toward his father prevented him from fully doing so, despite his talent.

### **What were you born for?**

To live blocked by something painful? Whether you are a musician, visual artist, cook, volleyball player, or salesperson… Face the pain, the terror.

### **‘This place is not for me!’**

That was what Bart’s father thought about church until he faced his true feelings and converted. Terminal cancer was what God used to reveal His mercy to him. Bart did not believe his father’s repentance, refused to accept it, and deliberately isolated himself.

Then he learned of his father’s inevitable death, and God used this to teach him mercy. Bart truly lived his band’s meaning and found the inspiration to write *I Can Only Imagine* — ‘Eu Só Posso Imaginar’ — which became a huge success and a liberation.

### **Imagine!**

How far you can go, who you can be, and what you can do if you learn mercy. You have talent, a dream, and a future, but you also have a past. Have you made peace with it?
