When we think of Gomer, the first word that commonly comes to mind is "prostitute". But that is not how she is presented in Scripture. Gomer is described as a "woman of prostitutions".

*“The beginning of the word of the Lord through Hosea. The Lord said to Hosea: Go, take a woman of prostitutions, and children of prostitution; for the land certainly prostitutes itself, turning away from the Lord.” (Hosea 1:2)*

It may seem like just a detail. But this difference completely changes how we understand her journey—and perhaps explains why her story remains so relevant.

But what is the difference? And why does this woman still reflect the reality of so many others?

The expression “woman of prostitutions” goes beyond a literal definition.

It reveals someone who seeks in people, relationships and validation what she has not found within herself. In Amor em Ruínas, Gomer will not pursue coins; she will seek to feel valued and perhaps, in this way, compensate for her ruined inner self.

But will she find fulfillment in decisions driven by her heart?

Although the story was written centuries ago, her behavior remains current. In their need to feel accepted, loved and desired, so many women today go through countless relationships, accept the unacceptable and, little by little, amid bad experiences and disillusionment, end up broken inside. 😔

Yet despite her decisions, she will be God's chosen woman for Hosea, so that the prophet will feel the pain He feels with those who despise Him.

Just as Gomer will seek in others' eyes what she will have in her marriage to Hosea, the people of Israel will seek from false gods what can only come from the Creator.

“The spirit of burning passion has deceived the people, and therefore they prostitute themselves and turn away from submission to their God.” (Hosea 4:12)
