To understand *Somos os Que Tiveram Sorte*, we need to go back to 1939, when **World War II begins with Germany's invasion of Poland.**

It is at this moment that we meet the **Kurcs**, a Jewish family living in Radom, Poland. Until then, they had led ordinary lives, with work, relationships, children and plans for the future. But the war changes everything, especially the path of each family member. 🤯

As the persecution of Jews and the conflict advance, the Kurcs end up **separated**. From then on, the series follows each family member in **different** places, showing the choices, escapes and difficulties they face to survive.🫣

**Who are the Kurcs?**

**Sol** and **Nechuma Kurc** have five children: **Genek, Mila, Addy, Halina and Jakob.**

When the family is **separated**, each person must find a **way** to survive. **Far** from home and **without** news of one another, they begin living without knowing **where** the others are or whether they are still alive. 👀

Throughout the series, these stories pass through different regions:

- **Poland**: where the family faces Nazi occupation and the persecution of Jews.
- **Siberia**: where Genek and Herta face the conditions of a Soviet labor camp.
- **Tehran** and **Italy**: through which different family members pass in their attempts to escape the war.
- **Brazil**: also becomes part of the Kurcs' journey during this period.

**A true story**

*Somos os Que Tiveram Sorte* is based on the book by **Georgia Hunter**, who discovered **while still young** that her own **family** had survived the **Holocaust**.😱

Following that discovery, **Hunter** spent **years** gathering **documents, photographs and accounts** from relatives to reconstruct what had happened to each family member. The result was the book *We Were the Lucky Ones*, published in 2017 and later adapted for television.
