Imagine finding the name of one of the book of Hosea's most memorable figures on a piece of pottery nearly 2,800 years old. 😱

It seems unlikely, but an archaeological discovery made in Samaria caught scholars' attention precisely because it mentions a woman named Gomer in administrative records from the reign of Jeroboam II. 😎

During excavations, archaeologists found dozens of pottery fragments used as a kind of tax receipt at the time. They recorded deliveries of wine and oil to the kingdom's administration. These documents became known as the Samaria Ostraca and date to the same period in which the prophet Hosea lived. 🤩

One of them stands out. Ostracon 50 bears the following inscription:

"In the fifteenth year, for Gomer, from Noah..."

What is most curious is that women's names were very rare in these records. The vast majority of inscriptions mention only men, making the presence of the name Gomer even more intriguing. 🤗

Archaeologists do not know exactly who this Gomer was. She may have been the recipient of a delivery of wine or oil, or even someone responsible for managing family properties.😱

Another interesting detail is the phrase "from Noah". Scholars believe it refers to the clan of Noah, a name that also appears in the Bible as one of Zelophehad's daughters (Numbers 27). This may indicate the family lineage to which this Gomer belonged.🤔

But could this be the same Gomer, wife of the prophet Hosea? 👀

The answer is: it cannot be confirmed. However, one thing is certain: finding the name "Gomer" in an archaeological record from the same period and region described in the book of Hosea is, at the very least, a fascinating coincidence. 🤭

Nevertheless, this study helps us better understand the historical context of the book of Hosea, bringing us closer to the reality of life in Samaria nearly 2,800 years ago. 😉
